The “RI” (from Italian ‘interwoven nets’) rockfall barrier has been designed to contrast the issue of rockfall events generating, on impact, high kinetic energy. The system’s peculiar feature is that of presenting a discrete net single strike barrier system. This feature will determine the automatic release of the panels in case of a rockfall strike and therefore such barriers are recommended in conditions where rockfalls may develop energy forces up to 2000KJ but where such events are rare. At present the only product manufactured and certified is model AC 2000 RI, which generally comprises the following: - SUPPORT STRUCTURE: consisting of 193.7/5.3mm diameter tubular steel support struts, 4.70 m high, laid at a nominal center distance of 8.00 m, surmounted by topmost fairlead tube, with panel release mechanism and base housing for ball hinge unit.;
- CAPTURE AND/OR CONTAINMENT STRUCTURE: consisting of net panels formed by AZn 6x19 rope, 5.00 m high and 8.00 m long, 10 mm diameter, interwoven with 250mm square mesh, AZn 7x19 perimeter rope, 18mm diameter, complete with eyes for the linking to bottom and top dampers; the panel is connected to 80x100mm hexagon mesh net made of double-twisted heavily coated 3mm diameter steel wire; each panel is provided with four dampers consisting of two AZn 7x19 friction ropes, 18mm diameter, carrying in series, two braking mechanisms comprising two specially shaped plates and one heat-treated C70 carbon steel flat plate, blocked by four Class 8.8 M14 bolts torqued to 70 Nm and protected from rusting by black cataphoresis coating and placed in a plastic container;
- LINKING STRUCTURE: consisting of four 12 mm diameter galvanized steel ropes for upslope, downslope, diagonal and side (only for outer uprights) installation, connected to the top of each upright and linked to ground anchors;
- GROUND FOUNDATION, beneath the support structure, for each upright, a 73x5.4mm diameter tubular micropile with length related to the mechanical charascteristics of the soil and surmounted by a swivel joint for the linking structure, comprising anchorage points in double spiroid rope with suitable cross-section and length.
The barrier is accompanied by a test certificate issued by accredited body following a crash-test carried out in the field in real-life conditions.
