Artigiana Costruzioni’s factory at Villa di Tirano, Sondrio, Italy manufactures the prefabricated steel module system called “VELA – Stabilizzazione Versanti (SV)” which fulfils a double function:
  1. CONTAINMENT STRUCTURE
  2. FACE REMODELLING
In the first instance it is possible to create a support structure in a very short time as an alternative to the traditional techniques such as ground reinforcement, gabions etc.
In the second case it is possible to build bermes, to stabilize loose terrain slopes, or weirs to regulate the flow of waterways. 
The “VELA – SV” system is a prefabricated galvanized steel modular unit which is anchored at a single point and which consists of a three-dimensional structure designed to hold a mass of  soil, detritus etc. in order to prevent its sliding downslope.

Main structural characteristics

  • SUPPORT STRUCTURE for the capture and/or containment structure; consisting of a pair of open section HEA 140-type beam in a cruciform configuration being overlaid to each other and rigidly bolted together, each provided with a yielding element for the purpose of ensuring controlled deformation; 
  • CAPTURE AND/OR CONTAINMENT STRUCTURE, consisting of a net of rings interlinked in at least four points, with each ring having a diameter of 350 mm; individual steel wire diameter of 3.00 mm (R H 1570 N/mm2) wound on itself at least seven times forming a continuous strand with an external diameter of 9.0 mm.  Zinc coating on 3.00 mm diameter wires exceeding 330g/m2; the rope of perimeter panel is worked in strands, hot-dip galvanized and blocked by aluminium-alloy sleeves suitably pressed or terminating in two eye loops complete with thimble and mechanically pressed at the end of the rope, and joined by means of high-strength hot-dip galvanized shackle; backup containment net of the double-twisted type, 80x100mm mesh, with individual galvanized steel wire of 2.7mm diameter; 
  • LINKING STRUCTURE, consisting of a hot-dip galvanized tubular steel strut equipped with all the devices for linking it to the SUPPORT STRUCTURE and to the GROUND FOUNDATION; the four guylines of the support structure are in hot-dip galvanized multi-strand rope ending in two terminals, one of which is complete with eye loop, galvanized thimble and pressed aluminium sleeve while the second is finished on site during installation and fastened by means of “U” clamps.  For the guyline-to-structure connection use is made of high-stength hot-dip galvanized shackles; 
  • GROUND FOUNDATION, consisting of a double rope anchoring system where the rope is provided with thimble and protective pipe in galvanized steel of suitable length and cross-section in the case of underlying rocky surface; through creation of a 150x150x12cm or 160x160x12cm reinforced concrete plaftform provided with anchorage point in case of underlying loose terrain.

  • ß: upslope incline angle, referred to the horizontal plane:  8° - 16° - 25°
  • q: upslope overload = 5 KN/m2

  • H = 3,10m – B = 3,10m
  • H = 2,50m – B = 4,00m

Deployment of “VELA-SV” systems

The laying of “VELA – SV” systems contemplates a host of operations which are indispensable for the proper assembly and erection of the systems and which may be summarised as follows:

  1. placement of “VELA – SV” system modules within the rockslide area or more generally within the unstable soil area;
  2. in case of underlying rocky surface, drilling operations, introduction of the anchors and grout injection of suitable cement mixture for the fixing of the same into the ground; in the case of underlying loose terrain, a casting of reinforced concrete foundation platform is necessary onto which the “VELA – SV” module shall be directly fixed during the assembly operations or to be cast previously in preparation to the subsequent fixing of the components; 
  3. assembly of “VELA – SV” system modules in accordance with the instruction of the user manual and their storage, while waiting for the final transport to their final destination;
  4. lifting and transport of modules to their final destination and fixing of the same to the ground anchors previously prepared, whether of the underground type or the platform type; handling of the modules to be assembled into their final configuration;
  5. backfilling of the continuous net structure with rock aggregate up to the correct height as required.
N.B.: The fitting together of the modules may be performed in conjunction with the other necessary operations. 
All materials used in the construction of "VELA - SV" systems are in accordance with the provisions of the ruling national and international standards
To make "VELA - SV" system modules  blend into their environment,  it is possible to screen them by grass seeding  or by using overhead plants in accordance with the practices of soil bioengineering.

Maintenance schedule

Artigiana Costruzioni’s design department, thanks to its valuable experience gained through many years of operating in the field of soil protection, has drawn up a management plan called “Inspection, Monitoring and Maintenance Plan”. The Plan is to assess the working order, the condition of the work and to draw up suitable intervention schedules.
